Frequently Asked Questions

What would I do as a volunteer?

There are many options that you can sign up for as a volunteer below are a few of the options available with their description:

Photographer

  • This position requires extensive professional experience as a photographer. Requires multiple high-resolution (we prefer 300 dpi) shots per child for publication in .jpeg format (web site, print fliers, large posters, etc).

Hair Stylist

  • This position requires the ability to cut and style all types of children/teens hair (a high need for skill in African American/curly hair) at the shoot, in addition to bringing your own supplies.

Guide

  • Guides are responsible for escorting the children while they are at the photo shoot and for completing the biography questionnaire with the child. There are two Guides assigned to each child.

    Host a Photoshoot

    • The space must accommodate 125 people with aesthetically pleasing indoor/outdoor areas for photography. Recent venues include Desert Botanical Garden and the MIM.

    Mobile Gallery

    • Help promote foster care and adoption by showcasing the Mobile Gallery at your office! The Children’s "Mobile Gallery" is a traveling exhibit that helps promote foster care, adoption and permanent connections. What's Included? There are 2 TVs attached. The TVs play a video interview with a child and photos of children that are awaiting their forever homes. It’s 13’ long by 8’ high. It does require full electricity. The Children’s Heart Gallery team sets up and breaks down the exhibit. Request a mobile gallery.

How old do I need to be to volunteer?

You must be 18 years old to volunteer.

Can I bring my children with me to volunteer at a Heart Gallery Event?

The day is intended to focus on and honor the children in foster care who are attending the event. We respectfully request that you do not bring your own children to an event.

Are there any requirements needed to become a volunteer?

Yes, you must complete the volunteer process. To learn more you can email volunteer@azdcs.gov.

How much will I interact with the kids?

Depending on the role you select when signing up to volunteer will determine the amount of interaction you might have with a child.

Can I meet a child who is featured in the gallery now?

If you are interested in a child on the gallery, please fill out the inquiry form for that child by clicking on their photo. It is more likely the children who have not been photographed would be in attendance at an upcoming event.

Do the children understand this is an event to promote adoption?

Each child’s readiness is different. It is up to the child on how they would like to view the event. If you have questions or do not know how to answer a child’s question at an event please locate a DCS Team member to offer you guidance and support.

I can't make an event. How else can I help?

Please fill out the DCS Community / Volunteer Interest Form. You can also click here to learn more.

How can my organization host an event?

Please fill out an inquiry form on the volunteer page.

How do I get a fingerprint card?
